The affordable South African red I want to drink – Rascallion 45 RPM 2016

South Africa is not my most frequent choice when it comes to reds around 10 Euros. Wines like this could easily change my attitude.

A new wave red – cheerful and lightish. It focuses on drinkability and purity. Reminds me of Hungarian Kadarka, but the warmer climate shows, it’s fuller in comparison; and although it’s pure and honest, you only get such intensity and clarity from the New World. Opens with marked, struck match reduction, but aeration helps it. Pretty cherry and hibiscus nose, with a touch of rooibos tea. Bright and almost fragile on the palate, it has great drive and drinkability, yet it’s not a simple wine. Balanced and refreshing, simply lovely!

Rating: very good, 6 points (88/100).
Price: Around 11 Euros in Germany.
