This is the wine that I regularly return to to gauge the vintage in Tokaj. Once again it filled me with hope that Tokaj drys might have found the right path. A St. Andrea korai chardonnay próbálkozásai hírhedten fásak voltak. Nem tudom, hogy ezek a borok kijutottak-e valaha a tölgyrengetegből. Feltételezem, hogy nem, mert a chardonnay-t hosszú évekre törölték a menüről. Ha jól dekódolom, akkor 2016-ban bukkant fel újra, mint kis szériás különlegesség. Így utólag nehezen tudom összerakni, hogy mi járhatott a fejemben, amikor a „Sommelier Collection”-t kiválasztottam: nosztalgia vagy a kiváló Etyeki Kúria után feltámadt hurráoptimizmus vagy csak az átkozott kíváncsiság? St. Andrea’s early attempts at chardonnay all got lost in the Hundred Barrel Wood. Unfortunately I have no idea whether they have ever managed to escape from the dark forest. I suppose not because for many years there was no St. Andrea Chardonnay. In retrospect I struggle to justify my choice: was it nostalgia or baseless optimism (after the excellent Etyeki Kúria) or just foolhardy curiosity that led me to the „Sommelier Collection”? A tökéletes időjárás nem feltétlenül eredményez nagy borokat. A kétkedők kontraintuitív érvelése szerint az igazi nagysághoz kell valamilyen kockázati elem, valami előre nem látható baleset, amivel a szőlőnek meg kell birkóznia. Nietzsche bizonyára bólogatna. Abban azonban nincs vita, hogy a szép idő remek alapborokat szül. Ahhoz nem kóstoltam még eleget, hogy biztosan mondhassam, de az az érzésem, hogy 2018 Alsó-Ausztriában újabb érv a fenti állítás mellett. It’s been often debated whether great weather produces really great wines. According to the counter-intuitive reasoning there’s got to be some element of risk, some unforeseen accident that the vine struggles to overcome in order to make the wine extraordinary. Maybe. However there seems to be general consent that great weather produces great entry level wines. I have yet to taste more wines to claim with confidence that 2018 in Lower-Austria is proof to that proposition so let’s just say that this is my hunch at the moment.
