Hawkeye in the Land of the Blind – Folly Arborétum Boróka 2018

A few weeks ago I received a 2 liter crown capped bottle of Ödön Nyári’s Olaszrizling from my parents. Some years ago I had great fun with this Badacsony bulk wine and this time was no different. On the one hand, it’s ridiculously cheap (5 euros ex cellar), on the other hand it’s a prime example of pure, unadorned olaszrizling. Emboldened by the experience I bought a mishmash collection of relatively cheap Hungarian wines. My hope was that if Ödön Nyári can offer a classy white for 2 euros/0.75 bottle, then it can’t be beyond well-established names to produce something similar for 3 times more. Wait till you see her – Sabar Olaszrizling “Estate Wine” 2018

My attempts at finding out how long I’ve been smitten by Sabar wines came to nothing more than the realization I’m a senile, sentimental, old fool. Five years worth of our archives are inaccessable and this is not just an annoying search dead end, but also a sore reminder of failure that hurts more than I’m willing to admit. All I can remember is that my first encounters were less than convincing with the early Sabar wines offering more oaky aromas than the grapes could accommodate. The breakthrough came with the 2015 Kőmagas Kéknyelű which made it abundantly clear that this winery was destined for more than just holding promise. Uralt erő – Laposa Furmint „Kőkövön” 2017

Lehetnek ennél jobb, nagyobb, fontosabb furmintok, nekem azonban ez a kedvencem az elmúlt néhány év kínálatából. Annyira megfogott, hogy előhívtam a gondolatkísérleti mérleget, és örömmel állapítottam meg, hogy a furmint akár fel is zárkózhat a most életük formáját futó második ligás fajták mellé (albarino, godello, vermentino, falanghina, carricante és társaik). Controlled power – Laposa Furmint „Kőkövön” 2017

For all I know there may be better, bigger, more important furmints around but this is certainly the one I enjoyed the most in recent years. In fact I’m starting to believe that dry furmint has got the potential to stand up to the in-form second-tier whites of today (albarino, godello, vermentino, falanghina, carricante and the likes). There is no white wine like this – Németh Pince Budai Zöld 2018, Badacsony, Lake Balaton

Based on that label you would never guess this is a serious wine. It is. It’s basically non-existent on the market, as it’s a small producer and they sell everything at cellar door – there is only one wine place where you can do that in Hungary, near Lake Balaton, where tourists are  plenty. It’s a shame, as this little producer makes some of Hungary’s most unique and longest living wines. Szászi Endre régi motoros az olaszrizling szakágban. A Kabócás mára ugyan kikopott a városi folklórból, de érdemes felidézni, hogy egykoron kategóriák között szökellő legenda volt. Beszámoló – Badacsony New Yorkban 2019

Mindössze egyetlen órát tölteni egy ilyen rendvényen… csak a helyszínen döbbentem rá, mennyire fájdalmas is az időszűkében hozott kompromisszum. Szívesen beszélgettem volna a borászokkal, pótolnivalóm is bőséggel akadt – hogy mást ne említsek, még semmit nem kóstoltam eddig ilyen nevektől, mint a Csendes Dűlő Szőlőbirtok -, de most be kellett érnem a kutyafuttában mintavételezéssel. Valószínűleg nem vagyok egyedül azzal a hitemmel, hogy fehérbort nem érdemes érlelni. Legalábbis nem a klasszikus évtizedes léptékben. Én úgy könyveltem el, hogy a komolyabb fehérek 3-5 évesen mutatják legszebb arcukat, 10 év után pedig meglepetés, ha a koron kívül marad még bennük valami tiszteletreméltó. Házi kedvenc – Sabar Olaszrizling Birtokbor 2017

Ha az ember valamit megszeret, az kissé olyan, mintha nevére is venné. Kritikusnak nem szerencsés állapot, ugyanakkor fontos jelzés, hogy maradt még benne gyúlékony anyag. A 2016-os Sabar Olaszrizlinget annyira szerettem, hogy egyrészt kartonszám fogyasztottam, másrészt féltettem: rosszul esett volna, ha rosszat olvasok/hallok róla. Pet – Sabar Olaszrizling Birtokbor 2017

When you fall in love with something it’s a bit like adopting it. Not the best stance for a critic but I have comforted myself by the thought that it’s a sign of still being passionate about wine. I loved the 2016 Sabar Olaszrizling so much that not only have I emptied at least a dozen bottles over the last 18 months but I have also got protective about it: I was frightened by the idea that some people might diss it.
